The historian Procopius states that the city of Ioannina, was founded in 527 AD by Justinian, who recognised the strategic importance of the area and therefore ordered the habitants of the old town of Evroia in Thesprotia ,to relocate to the penisula where the city's castle presently liers. In 1204 AD,Michael Angelos Comninos founded the Despotate of Epirus. The Despotate became subject to the rule of the Byzantine emperor Andronicus II, where upon a series of economic, administrative and religious privileges helped the city to flourish even more. The city became a major prosperity led to intellectual heights, especialy between 1788-1822,when Ali Pasha ruled Ioannina. When Ali Pasha was beheaded in 1822 for high treason Ioannina declined for a short period. It soon, though, advanced to new economic and cultural heights. The city was rebuilt after the fire in 1869.The Greek army liberated Ioannina in the 1913 and a new era begins for the city.

Ioannina is a town which provides a lot of cultural and administrative facilities, doesn't have only a glorious past but it has also created its own European identity.

A walk from the central square along Dodonis road or toward its picturesque lake, is a very good idea. Thus, one can see the Courts, the Prefecture and other new buildings. In Ioannina there is the Archeological museum (located in the central square), the Byzantine museum (situated at the citadel of Ioannina) and the Folkloric museum at.M.Angelou str .The Vreli museum is situated  at the 12th kl. of Ioannina-Athens High street. The Castle of Ioannina  is one of the oldest of its kind found in our country. It was built by Emperor Justinian in 528 AD. The lake Pamvotis with its islet is a very nice place to visit. Its depth is more than 13 meters and in the northern part of the lake lies a picturesque islet about 90 acres. It is accessible in ten minutes by small boats. There is a village on, built in the 17th century by refugees from Mani.
